Peppermint Oil

CAM Peppermint oil may be modestly effective in relieving some of the most common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and in reducing colonic spasm during gastrointestinal procedures. Peppermint oil in combination with caraway oil may be effective in the treatment of nonulcer dyspepsia, and topical application of peppermint oil has been proven effective in the treatment of tension headache.

Enteric-coated, pH-dependent peppermint oil capsules for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome in children

In a randomized, double-blind controlled trial, 42 children with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) were given pH-dependent, enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules of placebo. After 2 weeks, 75% of those receiving peppermint oil had reduced severity of pain associated with IBS. Peppermint oil may be used as a therapeutic agent during the symptomatic phase of IBS.
